There's no doubt that Harmony College is a fulfilling experience.
The faculty team members are eager to impart their knowledge and
they do so with enthusiasm and at a level to involve students of
all capabilities. I have learned a lot about coaching, especially
the need to be sensitive to the learning abilities and the embarrassment
thresholds of those being coached. A good relationship between a
coach and a quartet or chorus is essential for success and I found
it particularly helpful to have the views of three faculty members
with so much experience.
Similarly my second mini-stream, basic directing, was delivered
by three experienced directors. I thought I knew my weaknesses having
directed warm-ups for three years. I now know so much more about
it and what to practice. Directing the rhythm pattern should not
only be second nature but should also be used where appropriate
and I won't direct with a broken paint brush any more! If anyone
sees my palm upwards please tell me!

Rick Spencer, the visiting educator from the BHS is an inspiration
to all barbershoppers. His presentations, coaching and warm-up sessions
are gold dust and I've picked up many tips and fixes. Along with
the organization and friendly atmosphere of the weekend, it has
been a truly uplifting experience. I now feel more prepared and
equipped to help my chorus improve and enjoy their barbershop that
much more.
I am grateful to the Trustees of BABS Harmony Foundation for the
award of £100 towards the course fees.
