Section Leader’s Responsibilities

A Section Leader is the key person in each of the four sections. His job is to ensure unity and harmony both in an administrative and in a musical sense. The Section Leader should be working towards forming an administrative and musical team to address the following issues:-

a) The teaching of notes to the Section, either directly or by teach tapes. The Section Leader will be responsible for the production and the issue of teach tapes and for ensuring that they are accurate and up to date.

b) Teaching the Section proper vocal quality, by discussing and working with them in developing breath support and a tonal quality that is freely produced, well supported and resonant. He should try to identify a ‘role model’ within the Section who has a voice quality that he would be happy to be cloned throughout the Section.

c) The Section Leaders also have the responsibility of organising the auditioning of tapes produced by members for competitions or special choral events. The evaluation of these tapes should be positive and educational. Members of the Section should be made aware of any vocal production issues as well as any note, breath control or vocal quality problems.

d) The Section Leader will be responsible for the organising a ‘Buddy’ system for new members. Once a member has been assigned to a voice part, it will be up to the section leader to allocate an individual, within his Section, to act as friend and mentor to the new member. This ‘Buddy’ should ensure that the new member has everything that they need to facilitate the learning process and endeavour to make them feel valued within the Club. This would include making sure that they’ve got all the music that they need and may involve some personal help, in facilitating their early competence with regard to vocal quality and notes.

e) The Section Leader should keep a register of attendance of people within the Section.

f) The Section Leader is responsible for the organisation of Section rehearsals both during practice evenings and, on occasions, outside of normal rehearsal nights.

g) It is the Section Leader’s responsibility, together with his team, to motivate and enthuse the Section in all aspects of the Club’s work.

The above is an outline of the responsibilities of a Section Leader......It is not expected that the Section Leader would take on all of the above personally. It is more likely that he will delegate areas of responsibility to members of the section. The important thing is that the tasks get done.....If one person is absent then another must assume his area of responsibility. Apathy is infectious, it must play no part in our organisation.
