Music Stream Overview

The Music Stream provides a number of courses catering for everybody; from those who just want to know their crotchets from their quavers, through to beginning and more experienced arrangers.

For the first time, this year we are offering a course for Intermediate Arrangers. This is aimed at those who have, possibly, attended the Beginning Arranging class, who have some arranging experience and who want to start getting their teeth into more meaty projects. The idea will be to arrange a whole song for use in the Chorus Stream at Harmony College 2012.

The Music courses on offer this year are

  • Basics of Music I - for beginners wishing to acquire some ability to identify the notes on the score and an understanding of timing. IMPORTANT: This class will only run on Friday.
  • Basics of Music II - Deals with more complex rhythms, intervals and simple chords. This is necessary knowledge for theory of harmony, arranging etc. IMPORTANT: This class will only run on Saturday.
  • Theory of Harmony - how chords are constructed, which chords we use, harmonic progressions, the circle of 5ths.
  • Beginning Arranging - how to put all this knowledge to use, arranging songs in the barbershop style.
  • Intermediate Arranging - for those who have some arranging experience and want to extend their knowledge.

These courses, except for Basics I, all build on previous knowledge so you need to be sure what your current level of knowledge is before enrolling on one of these classes.

On this site, there is a self-assessment questionnaire. You are very strongly encouraged to use it to make sure that your level of knowledge is suitable for the course you have in mind. Once you have completed it, download the self-assessment answers and find out how you did. No cheating!
